Place the Keycaps! Controls
Every input the game gives you — the three special keybinds, standard movement, and what changes on phones and tablets. Verified against the live beta on July 16, 2026.
PC controls at a glance
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| WASD | Move (standard Roblox movement) |
| Mouse | Camera; click to pick up and place keycaps |
| Q | Throw keycap — tosses the cap you're holding |
| CTRL | Unlock mouse — frees the cursor for precise placement |
| R | Upgrades menu — opens the skill-point panel |
| Space | Jump (standard Roblox) |
Only Q and CTRL are called out by the developers in the game description; R appears in the game's own UI hints. Everything else is Roblox's default control scheme.
Q — throw keycap
Tosses whatever keycap you're holding. It's the game's undo button: grabbed a K when you needed an L? Q it and grab again — faster than walking it back to the pile. Two practical notes: aim your throws somewhere memorable (a cap flung into a 25-player scrum can be genuinely hard to find again), and remember thrown caps still count toward the Sorted All Keycaps badge — stragglers along walls are the classic reason a "finished" run has no badge.
CTRL — unlock mouse
By default your cursor drives the camera. Press CTRL and the cursor detaches, turning fiddly slot-aiming into simple point-and-click; press it again to go back to camera mode. The rhythm that works: camera mode for the walk, CTRL mode for the placement. If you take one habit from this page, take this one — precision placement is the difference between seating a cap on the first try and nudging it around a crowded board.
R — upgrades menu
Opens the upgrade panel: a set of locked upgrades priced in skill points. Launch-week gameplay footage suggests points come from completing keyboards; exact upgrade effects are still being pinned down while the beta shifts (this is the [FIXES!] era — things change). We'll expand this section as effects are confirmed rather than guess.
Mobile & tablet: how touch maps
Place the Keycaps! runs on phones and tablets like any standard Roblox experience, with the usual touch layout:
- Virtual joystick (bottom-left) to move; drag anywhere on screen to steer the camera.
- Tap a keycap to pick it up, tap a slot to place — tap replaces the mouse click.
- On-screen buttons cover the special actions where the game exposes them; there's no CTRL equivalent to worry about, since your finger is the free cursor.
Honest note: sorting is quicker with a mouse — reading small legends and hitting tight slots benefits from a pointer. Mobile is fully playable; it's just the slower way to the badge.
Can you rebind keys?
The game doesn't offer a rebinding option as of July 16, 2026 — Q, CTRL and R are fixed. Roblox's own settings control general things like camera mode and shift-lock, but not this game's special binds.
